Staying Healthy After 35: How To Work Out After 35
There’s many different training techniques for when you reach 35 and go beyond 35 and they probably won’t be the same as when you were 25. Somebody who used to run when they were 25, maybe their knees aren’t as good. Maybe they’re going to have to bike, use a bicycle which is less pressure on your joints. Instead of jogging maybe you’re walking. There’s different forms of exercise today that are less impact on your body. Pilates, yoga, many different things are available today that you may want to look at because you are aging. Your body can’t handle all the same things that it did when you were younger. But just make sure you get out and do something on a regular basis.
Strength training and cardio training should be done separately. You really should do one one day and the other the next day, and keep alternating. That will keep things fresh. Sometimes cardio training can get boring. If you can mix it up the next day and do strength training it’ll be easier to come back and do cardio the next day. So it’s always better to mix it up. Do one day strength, one day cardio. Strength training is very important after you’re 35 because you want to build muscle and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. Plus you look better.
When you’re strength training, the ideal number of sets to do is 3. And you should do 8 to 12 repetitions, with anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds rest in between each set. When you’re training specific groups, give yourself about 48 hours to recover before you go back to those specific muscle groups. Unless, of course, it’s the stomach; you can train your stomach every day.
Stretching after 35 is important for several reasons. One is it just feels good, but another is it allow you to have less injuries when you’re doing specific activities. And it allows you to do more activies because you have a longer range of motion and you’re able to do more and be more physical.
It’s always important to warm up, whether you’re under 35 or over 35, but it’s even more important when you’re after 35. You want to make sure there’s blood in those muscles so that when you’re exercising you don’t pull a muscle or injure yourself. As you get older it’s very important to cool down after exercise. What it can do is it can keep you from getting sore muscles after your workout, and it’ll help you keep from getting injured in future workouts.
Everybody sees results at a different time. The interesting thing is, the more weight you have to lose, the quicker you’re going to see results when you start looking after your diet and you exercise properly. So the person who’s in pretty good shape who wants big changes, they’re not going to see big changes. They may see changes over time but it’s going to take them weeks. Somebody who has a lot more weight to lose is going to see results much quicker, in a week or two weeks.
